FAQ

We have built a reputation on doing complex work well, and we share what we know. Here, clients, collaborators, and community members can find answers grounded in experience and knowledge.

  • Where do you build?

While our deepest expertise is rooted in Northern California, we take on projects beyond the region when the scope and complexity are the right fit. This selective approach ensures that each project receives the same level of attention, quality, and on-the-ground presence that defines our work.

  • Why does it cost so much to build in Northern California?

Building in Northern California is expensive because every component—from the land to the labor to the permitting—is affected by high demand and regional complexity. That being said, we’ve been building here for decades and it has never been simple or inexpensive. The land, the codes, the terrain, all demand experience, trusted connections, and patience.

Rising costs reflect the realities of working in one of the most regulated and resource-intensive regions in the country. It’s why seasoned local teams like ours matter; we know what’s required of building here—from seismic expertise to aesthetics—and we know how to anticipate challenges before they become expensive problems.

  • How does your local expertise and community knowledge in Napa Valley and the surrounding areas support complex construction projects?

Our deep roots in Napa Valley and Wine Country give us an undeniable advantage when navigating complex builds. We’ve spent decades building here—earning trust, navigating approvals, and learning which doors to knock on when time matters.

Our local knowledge is more than helpful, it’s the difference between momentum and significant delays. And if you’re new to the area? We don’t just build structures, we can help you integrate into the community with authenticity and confidence.

  • Do you work with architects, designers, and engineers?

Yes, collaboration with architects, designers, and engineers is central to our work. We partner with acclaimed local and international teams who trust us for our communication, consistency, and respect for design intent. Our proven process scales to fit each project’s needs—whether that means managing intricate site logistics or ensuring precise execution of a single detail.

For our out-of-town partners, our on-the-ground presence and knowledge of regional costs, codes, and trade networks often translate into measurable time and budget savings. Our strategic approach to building project teams—assessing client projects for best subcontractor fit based on their needs, budgets, location, and preferred communication styles—benefits our collaborators as well as the project on the whole.

  • What is an ADU or Accessory Dwelling Unit, and can you build them?

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) and Accessory Structures are stand-alone additions, separate from the primary structure on the property. These thoughtfully designed additions expand a project’s functionality, enhance lifestyle possibilities, and integrate seamlessly with the existing home and landscape.

Unique single-use structures we’ve built include, but are not limited to:

    • Barns (party barns, carriage barns, event barns, etc.)
    • Studios (art studios, yoga studios, writing studios, etc.
    • Pavilions
    • Lofts
    • Retreats
    • Cottages, Casitas, Guest Houses
  • What’s the difference between a general contractor and a design-build firm?

A general contractor typically enters the process once the design is complete, managing construction according to plans provided by the architect or designer, while a design-build firm is involved from day one. At Centric, we bridge both worlds.

Our team often joins early in the design process, serving as a hub for communication, collaboration, and problem-solving among all parties. This integrated approach reduces risk, improves accountability, and streamlines project management—ensuring the vision, schedule, and budget align from the start.

  • What makes a general contractor qualified to handle complex builds with infrastructure, utilities and custom architecture for estates, ranches, and remote properties?

Our ability to execute complex builds comes from experience, foresight, and trusted partnerships—and it’s a great opportunity to put our love of pre-construction to good use. We plan and construct complete estate campuses and remote ranch properties—integrating roads, bridges, power, and water systems seamlessly with highly detailed architecture.

Our decades-long relationships with specialized trade partners mean every component is executed by experts. We also conduct feasibility studies and coordinate permitting, ensuring projects are not only buildable, but efficient and compliant from the start.

  • How do you balance luxury design details with practical considerations like maintenance, utilities, and long-term use?

We believe beauty and practicality should reinforce each other. Our hospitality, corporate, and commercial clients appreciate our home builder’s eye for detail and our private clients value our ability to apply the knowledge obtained from our more complex, infrastructure-heavy projects in ways that improve their overall experience and enhance their project.

This cross-pollination of what may seem like disparate skill sets is actually one of the key differentiators that helps us to outshine the competition.

  • When should we bring on a general contractor?

The earlier, the better—ideally, before the drawings are finished. That’s when experience saves the most—when we can guide design decisions, test assumptions, and keep beautiful ideas buildable.

Pre-construction input is a small investment that can yield significant savings—sometimes paying for itself several times over through smarter decisions. When we join early, the full team develops rapport, communication protocols, and shared goals before breaking ground, allowing construction to move efficiently from day one.

  • How do you support projects after construction is complete?

We offer comprehensive post-construction maintenance and preventative management programs through our Centric Toolbox offering. Preventative care costs far less than repair.

Our programs are tailored to keep buildings performing at their best—reducing downtime, extending equipment life, and optimizing energy efficiency. These services are delivered by a team of construction professionals backed by a certified and insured construction company that gets the job done on schedule and within budget. They are members of our team, ensuring the same standard of excellence.

  • What are branded residences and do you have experience building them?

Branded residences are privately owned homes connected to luxury hotel brands, offering owners resort-level amenities and strong investment value. They require a delicate balance of precision, discretion, and collaboration.

Our team has built within active resorts, delivered second and third-phase expansions, and contributed to development planning from the ground up. We bring the craftsmanship and finish sensibility of high-end residential work to the scale and structure of hospitality construction—a unique blend. It’s that duality that makes us a trusted partner for branded residential projects.
